A leading figure of his generation, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot painted heroic, idealized landscapes that included biblical or classically historic subjects. He also painted smaller rural landscapes in which he hoped to capture nature truthfully and directly. Influenced by artists of the Barbizon school, who painted out-of-doors (en plein air) rather than in studios, Corot’s rural landscapes are a fore- shadowing of Impressionism. In this view of a dreary day in the French village of Saint-Lô, the silvery hues and soft focus cast a dreamlike aura over both man and nature.
